Responsibilities

  • Print and review schedule daily in preparation for the day
  • Verify purpose of patient’s visit; prepare patients for examination and assist providers with the examination and/or procedure
  • Take vital signs, heights and weights of patients; plot growth charts; record immunizations
  • Perform laboratory and screening tests customarily performed in a medical office such as visual acuity, Snellen tests, audiometric screening, spirometry tests and EKGs
  • Perform basic lab tests as needed ( e.g., pregnancy, dipstix, rapid strep, etc)
  • Submit lab specimens and forms to Lab Technician for laboratory pickup
  • Set up appropriate instrument trays for special procedures
  • Apply and remove bandages and dressings, orthopedic appliances such as knee immobilizers, envelope slings, orthotics and similar devices and assist providers in cast, splint and orthopedic appliance applications
  • Select and adjust crutches and provide patient instruction on proper use
  • Check equipment and stock examination room with necessary supplies for the day's work
  • Set up rooms for provider use in accordance to patient's needs; prepare rooms after each use
  • Instruct and counsel patients in their health care according to the physician’s instructions
  • Provide confidential, culturally sensitive and appropriate language translation for provider and patient
  • Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous or intradermal injections, skin tests, venipuncture and skin punctures for withdrawing blood under the direct supervision of the provider
  • Clean and stock exam rooms at end of day; wash, wrap and autoclave instruments according to guidelines
  • Prepare disposable and infectious waste for appropriate disposal
  • Ensure patient encounter forms and other forms and logs are completed accurately
  • Maintain electronic patient records and charges to ensure completeness and accuracy of information
  • Obtain reservation number as needed for appropriate lab tests for FPACT patients with in-house labs performed
  • Complete appropriate electronic forms as required for the patient’s medical treatment, including radiology and laboratory slips and referrals based on provider findings
  • Assist with referral coordination when appropriate
  • Assist in minor surgery and other specialty surgical and medical procedures under the direct supervision of the provider
  • Review, perform and schedule preventive health maintenance per schedule

Qualifications

Minimum

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Clinical Medical Assistant Certification indicating completion of program and externship from an approved school or hospital
  • CPR Certification (BLS Child, Infant, Adult)
  • Phlebotomy experience; certificate preferred
  • Minimum four years’ back office or three years’ specialty practice experience
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Required Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Good knowledge of general back office procedures, such as taking vitals, performing venipuncture, administering immunizations, etc
  • Good comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology in English and Spanish
  • Emergency response capability for possible crisis situations
  • Experience/familiarity with computers, Microsoft Office products (Word/Excel), business e-mail communication systems and internet search capabilities
